14 Reasons Why Mac Sucks!

ipod day2 thumb1 14 Reasons Why Mac Sucks!

I’m sick of those commercials and many people with Apple computers who think they are superior than your PC because of the computer they have?

Get the Facts and defend yourself!

#1—It just works
Hmm…just about every PC in the world works fine out of the box too. This may have been a point back 26 years ago when PCs were kits, but now, it’s standard. As it turns out, the Windows Kernel is very reliable, all Windows crashes are caused by people installing bad software. The same thing will happen to a mac for the record.

#2—You can make amazing stuff
This advertises iLife ’06, Apple’s suite of software. Most venders will include similar software, if not more powerful applications. Many new PCs include Nero, Pinnacle, photo editing apps, and various other applications that do much of the same tasks as iLife ’06. Windows Vista has all of the functionality of iLife ’06 included in the Premium versions.

#3—Design that turns heads
Apple computers have interesting designs. However, these designs have major shortcomings. Apple notebooks use soldered processors, preventing upgrades. Socket based CPUs have been the norm since the P4 came out in late 2000. Also, Apple hardware like the iMac have limited space for upgrades and integrated components are more likely to fail compared to independent subsystems. Apple’s design can be compared to some car designs—such as the DeLorean DMC-1 (the famous car from the Back to the Future Trilogy). This car had an amazing exterior design, but the car was an ultimate failure due to it’s lackluster performance and high performance to price ratio. Anyone without unlimited funds would chose something more utilitarian than a Mac.

#4—11400 viruses? Not on a mac
This argument is flawed. The reason there are few viruses on macs has to with issues of user share. Less than 2% of people use mac compared to over 90% for Windows. This is a matter of logistics rather than security. Systematic, a leading computer security provider, states that OS X is less secure than Windows XP. Apple gives its users a false sense of security. Apple users often neglect basic security practices, such as running a firewall, using caution when opening emails, and running antivirus software. Apple computers ship with the built in firewall disabled, while Windows XP ships with in on by default. Widows also advises users to run security software. As the Apple user share grows, there will be more and more threats and mac users will not be prepared.

#5—Next year’s OS today
I cannot help but laugh at Apple’s argument here. First off, their widgets are stolen from an application known as Konfabulator, which is available for both Windows and Mac. An RSS reader? IE7 has this as does Mozilla Firefox. Apple did not invent RSS either. Tabbed browsing? IE7. Video conferencing? AIM or Windows Messenger. Parental Controls? I don’t support that kind of software but there are plenty of
applications around and Windows Vista will have it included. Easy DIY scripting with Automator? Windows Scripting Host is much more powerful and has been included since Windows ’98. Mail with built-in spam blocking? Outlook Express has this as well. So all of Apple’s “innovations” are just rip-offs of other applications.

#6—The latest Intel chips
WHAT? Core Duo is hardly Apple only. Every major vender carries it. Nice try, Apple.

#7—Instant Video Chats
iChat AV isn’t the only application that allows video conferencing. It’s not the first either. Windows has had NetMeeting, a video conferencing app since Windows 98SE (1999) and Windows Messenger has this functionality as well. Many notebooks have built in webcams. Apple forces people to buy a webcam though, even if one is not desired. Users should have the choice if they would like to have one.

#8—More fun with Photos
iPhoto is the application being advertised in this point. Again, many venders chose to include this type of software, so Apple is hardly alone in this. One can also download Adobe Photoshop Album for free. Also, a cross platform program is available called the GIMP, which is many times more powerful than iPhoto or Adobe Photoshop. Again, much of the functionality of iPhoto is included in Windows Vista.

#9—One Click Websites
Computers running Microsoft Office, which nearly every Windows user owns a copy of, include both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Frontpage. These powerful WYSIWYG applications are vastly superior to the included Apple apps. Popular blogging sites such as blog.com and livejournal.com have web-based tools to accomplish the same tasks. All webcams come with easy to use software that records the video to a standard file which can be uploaded. Sorry, Apple. If you need additional functionality over the online blogging tools, then you are an advanced user and likely do your own coding, and wouldn’t desire a HTML generator.

#10—Amazing Podcasts
Apple is flaunting their GarageBand program, which is cool, but utterly pointless to the average user. This is a classic case of “Bloatware”—preinstalled software which serves to slow down your computer. Windows comes with a much smaller “Sound Recorder” application, which allows for simple recording. A free alternative is Audacity, again available to many platforms.

#11—Rock star tunemaking
Is tunemaking a word? Again, this is about the GarageBand program, which also allows mixing of various loops. A much more powerful (and easier) application is Cakewalk Kinetic, which retails for approx $20. Again, this application would not be used by most people, so including it serves very few.

#12—Hollywood style movies
iMovie is the application being discussed in this area. A very similar application, Windows Movie Maker, has been included in Windows XP since 2001. Free upgrades have been realeased over the years, making WMM into a very useful application for the novice. With the Apple solution, as one moves up in skill and desires more features, they are forced to buy Final Cut Express, a powerful, but difficult to use application for the hefty sum of $299. Software venders developed many video editing applications for Windows ranging in price from $20 to upwards of $10^5! Many applications in the $50-$100 range are very powerful and much more intuitive than FCE.

#13—No hunting for drivers
Both Windows and mac come with a large driver database, but there are far more drivers available for Windows. Both platforms use PnP technology, allowing for automatic installation and configuration of the drivers. What Apple fails to state is that many devices simply do not work with mac. A large number of printers, scanners, and modems will not be recognized by mac, and mac needs to have Apple firmware on a disc burner in order for it to function. Only the Airport Extreme card works with macs, other PCI cards will not, so if one needs 802.11a, they would need to buy a (very) costly Ethernet adapter. The process of manually installing drivers can be rather tedious for the average user, but most manufactures will include an installer program to simplify the process. Yes, there is no hunting for drivers on a mac, simply because there are no drivers for a mac! Which is the bigger trade off?

#14—Awesome out of the Box
Read the previous 13 points. Any newly purchased system works perfectly out of the box.

Yes you are correct sir.. All mac is is a Glorified Version of the Unix kernel… not to mention that i can download and install Debian or Ubuntu for free and make a mac system out of a PC… OS X is terrible and expensive. If you compare the prices of the laptops and their specs from macs to PCS you find that a mac costs on average around $1000 dollars more then a PC of equal specs. Now, this in its self is shocking because the 1000 dollars is for all the Bloat ware and the OS that mac has.. Thats it. Its for Software. So, who ever feels like paying 1000 dollars for something that can be emulated by free software better then go ahead buy a mac.

first of all, safari was released BEFORE ie7 with tabbed browsing, making Safari ahead. also, my mac doesn’t come with shitware like office trial, Nero and Pinnacle trials, and such. it STOPS WORKING after it expires. My mac comes with software that allows me to easily edit videos with iMovie, make my own music with GarageBand, organize all of my photos with face recognition, auto map view of where you have taken your pictures, iChat for video conferencing, iDVD to make my own dvd’s, an easy to you web site designer called iWeb, and many other great bundled programs. These are not trial programs, and do not effect the speed of the system. Also, apple has video guides for most of their programs. Who wants to sit in front of their computer for 1-3 hours reading a PDF on how to use nero, or other programs from third party company’s. And if you have a software problem with your system, forget it. You call the manufacture and your response is that its a software problem, and we will transfer you to microsoft, but you will be charged $50 per hour, and your charged wether your problem is resolved or not. All microsoft wants is money, and to rip their customers off. Mac is the best right now, and Microsoft should stop copying apple in what they do and then try to release a bullshit OS before apple so they don’t look like the copiers. Fu** Microsoft and their Shitty OS.

What ever happened to human user interface design? the newest mac – macbook pro running latest snow leopard is slower and more torpid than the 1984 macintosh! Why don’t they put priority on snappy user interface? I click, and the beach ball spins. THAT SUCKS APPLE !!! GET A CLUE!!!!

    @Ryan
lame POV lolz… why blame MCSFT if you dont know how to use nero? based on my experience if you have all the legit copy of a software, you won’t be in trouble in having any problem running them and even my 9 years old son are able to use nero rofl!!!…

if you clearly read my post you’ll understand what i am talking about. everything on mac works perfectly for one sole reason, they are all made by Apple just for Mac and for most windows application are not made by microsoft alone. now who’s OS is a shitty? and how could you say MCRSFT is copying Mac? don’t you know that Mac is a an OS skinned free OS? Mac runs on linux kernel and linux is FREE. why you pay for FREE?

@Ryan: You can’t use Nero? You are either the biggest troll ever or the biggest idiot. Either way you should stop posting because your posting sucks.

3 Hours reading a PDF on Nero. Wow, that’s sad.

I totally agree. People say mac is excellent but I start using it, I felt that it is a stupid box. It does not have lot of functionality except it has better graphics than windows. My preference goes to ubuntu, windows xp and crappy mac.

The mac uses all the high end hardware like, 2.6GHz CPU, DDR3 RAM, 7200 RPM hard disk. If I use the same hard disk then I can bring my Ubuntu faster than Mac so performance is not a great deal in MAC.

If you install some non-apple software then mac will crash but there are very little software out there.

Command button is in a stupid position, lot of application uses the Command button instead of Ctrl but choosing Cmd + alt or ctrl + alt very confusing.

    Few missing functionality/software:
    — No winzip like utility to view the files without extracting it
    — No tree command
    — Not possible to scroll the all the open windows (though Cmd+tab and Cmd+~ works but not fully satisfy all the requirements)
    — Never flushes the DNS properly after VPN connection, you have to use dscacheutil and it is very annoying
    — Unplug external monitor then all the application still goes to external monitor window

lolz! I did not mean to offend the author. But just cant hold myself back from indicating the humorous typo!

    @Kuppa
Kuppa. that hardware you listed, is not the high end hardware. 7200rpm hard drives are not the high end. 2.6ghz cpu’s have been around for years. ddr3 ram is being used by most vendors now.

Macs are usually OLD hardware unless you wanted to pay more than just an arm and a leg.

To all potentially interested regarding design work and graphics…

I have been doing visual design for two and three dimensional product
for over 30 years. In 1990 I made a choice between Adobe and PC based
software and hardware because of functionality and cost effectiveness.
PC won out. PC is more cost effective and you can do MORE handsome
design work on a PC MORE EFFICIENTLY.
I am so SICK of the prima donnas who have their blinders WELDED onto
the sides of their heads. Part of this is because the funding for
MAC and Adobe products must be very efficient from the Mac and
Adobe companies to the colleges and universities that are training
future professionals in visual design. Students graduating from
universities that have their equipment heavily discounted/donated
by the Mac/Adobe camps and don’t want to learn more software and hardware
after they graduate because they have already invested well over 4 years
and upwards of 15,000 dollars to learn this software and hardware.

When I show a potential client the work I do (I don’t tell them I do
most of it with PC based software and hardware) the potential clients
are very excited and relieved to know that the speeds at which I
accomplish this are within their budgets.

If the Adobe/Mac camp doesn’t think I gave it a fair airing, they need
to know that I have spent over 20,000 dollars on MAC/Adobe stuff and still
would rather go PC with PC based software whenever possible.

I am not wild about Vista yet I will take Vista and PC based software
over Adobe products & Macs ANY DAY. Perhaps I will change my mind some
time… I don’t think so in the near future, though.

The one factor that is MADDENING TO ME, though, is that the Microsoft camp
must be hiring Mac based programmers to do their design because stuff
is starting to look contaminated with MAC functioning/motifs.

HEY, MICROSOFT!!! Skip the Mac imitations… The people out there using
PC want PC not MAC, NOT ADOBE. Thank you very much!

    @Ryan
hahaha u dumbass ryan, first off who the fuck cares if mac has video tutorials, there are 10,000,000 tutorials for any software program on youtube that are more in depth than anything apple has to offer. and if you dont know how to use a simple program like nero and you need a video tutorial, well your just fucking retarded.

second off, who did you say wants to rip off thier customers? isnt it apple thats selling their low quality shitboxes and slim ass toys (and theyre not computers, macbook air isnt practical, its just something to show off and play with; i mean come on it doesnt even have a disc drive! you need a seperate usb disc drive to watch dvd’s or really do anything!!) for like thousands of dollars? arent they the ones who sell music for a dollar a song and expect everyone to have like 10,000 songs with ipods that have 160gb? all pc’s regularly cost somewhere between $500-1000 dollars- you show me a mac that costs less than $750, and ill hand you $20 via paypal. or even $1200 for that matter

and get this, the reason mac’s cost so much isnt because theyre superior, its because they trademarked their design and they dont let anyone else make a laptop that runs an apple OS. so basicly they cornered the mac market. if you want an apple OS, you need to buy your computer directly from apple, and they can jack up the prices as high as they want.

my $0.02, and ryan wtf are you retarded, do some research before u make dumbass comments
