Revo Uninstaller Cleanly Removes your Apps

March 1st, 2008

Have you ever installed a program and decided later on that you didn’t want it anymore? The natural thing is to uninstall it, but it never seems like Windows removes every trace of the application. I’ve been in this situation quite a few times, but thanks to Tinhed of cybernet forum, I won’t be having so many troubles anymore. He pointed out a free program called Revo Uninstaller that is kind of the all-in-one suite for keeping your computer clean. After trying it out, (it works on Windows 2000 and newer) I have to say that it is an impressive application. It not only uninstalled software and notified me of the “leftovers,” but it also let me manage the applications that start with Windows as well as cleanup some of the other junk on my computer. –Uninstaller– This is really the shining point of Revo so I saw it fitting to cover it first. When you go to uninstall a program, Revo begins scanning your computer looking for the files that were created during the installation ... Read More

$16,500 Suissa’s Wooden Enlightened PC?

October 4th, 2007

Like other Suissa PCs, the Enlighten’s case is made of wood meant to last through many cycles of component gutting and upgrading. Unlike the others, this one is built around a MicroATX mobo. This qualifies as art, and is therefore above a certain amount of practical criticism, but I can’t get over the fact that wood isn’t going to dissipate heat nearly as well as aluminum. Did I mention it is $16,500? For that, you get an Intel Quad core CPU or AMD X2 6400+, Nvidia 8800GTX or ATI Radeon HD2900XT, with 4GB of RAM, DVD burner, a TB of HDD and a card that says “I have too much disposable Income!” The power supply is hidden in the block below the plexiglass-faced wood ring. I think this is the kind of computer an architect might want in his mid-century house, but if I’m dropping Civic money on a computer, it’s going to include at least three 30-inch displays. Just saying. [Suissa] ... Read More

Hackers vow to thwart Apple’s iPhone re-lock/disablement

September 26th, 2007

“It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” said Steve Jobs. “We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it’s our job to stop them breaking in.” Indeed. Yesterday Apple issued a statement declaring that currently available unlocking solutions for using the iPhone on a carrier other than AT&T; in the US or other authorized carriers in Europe cause “irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software,” and that an update appearing this week “will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable.” Whether or not such a complete disablement of unlocked iPhones by Apple is even possible remains a point of debate, not to mention the implications for Apple’s image that could accompany a mass bricking of devices. However, it could reasonably be claimed that such a disablement would merely be a side effect of necessary iPhone software updates, not an intentional move to punish unlockers. After all, as we noted earlier this month, most current iPhone unlock ... Read More

Sony uses rootkits, charges F-Secure

September 17th, 2007

A line of USB drives sold by Sony installs files in a hidden folder that can be accessed and used by hackers, a Finnish security company charged Monday, raising the specter of a replay of the fiasco that hit Sony’s music arm two years ago when researchers discovered that its copy protection software used rootkit-like technologies. According to F-Secure, the fingerprint-reader software included with the Sony MicroVault USM-F line of flash drives installs a driver that hides in a hidden directory under “c:\windows”. That directory and the files within it are not visible through Windows’ usual APIs, said F-Secure researcher Mika Tolvanen in a posting to the company’s blog Monday. “[But] if you know the name of the directory, it is possible to enter the hidden directory using [the] Command Prompt, and it is possible to create new hidden files,” said Tolvanen. “There are also ways to run files from this directory.” All of this —...
